Jude Griebel is a Montreal-based artist whose work has continually focused on the negotiation of identity through narrative imagery, drawn from both fictional and biographical sources. His paintings depict young characters in allegorical situations that involve elements of exploration and transformation. In these images, rooms from the artist's childhood homes are often used as backdrops for illusory and supernatural experiences. Predominant influences for these works have included picture book and ghost story narrative, contemporary and historical book illustration (by illustrators such as J.J Granville, William Steig, Edward Gorey and Maurice Sendak) and the stage sets of theatre productions.
Jude Griebel received his bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2003, and studied printmaking at the Santa Reparata School of Art in Florence, Italy. His work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia. Griebel has recently worked as an artist in residence in Yokohama, Japan, and at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Belgium. He recently published a book of text and images with the aid of the Canada Council for the Arts, titled Footsteps in the Maucaulay House.
