Barbara Milne
Barbara Milne Biography
Born in Windsor Ontario, Milne has an Honours degree in Fine Arts from York University in Toronto. In 1979 she moved to Calgary. Impressed with the space, light and monumentality of her surroundings, Milne began to address the subject of landscape. Seeing the environment as both powerful and fragile, Milne reshapes her surroundings through sketches, collage and memory, resulting in work that presents a parallel experience and emotional resonance of place.
Milne has attended various artist residencies in Iceland, Newfoundland, Skoki and the Columbia Icefield. She taught as a sessional instructor in Painting and Drawing at the the Alberta College of Art from 1988 to 2012. In 2016, a self-directed residency entitled, "Responding to the collection of the Whyte Museum" in Banff, was followed by a solo exhibition and catalogue at the Whyte Museum. She has exhibited in public and private galleries across Canada and her works are in collections in Canada and Internationally, including the Canada Council Art Bank, the Canadian Embassy in Brussels, Bank of America, and The Alberta Foundation for the Arts. She is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy.
Married to artist Bill Laing for 38 years, together they have 2 adult children, twins, Claire and David.
