Holland born, Calgary based artist Marjan Eggermont’s steel etchings are a unique departure from traditional printmaking on paper.  The metal surfaces of her work are multi-faceted and rich in texture.  Eggermont’s innovative work has continued to gain recognition, including being named one of the 20 most influential artists in Calgary by the Calgary Artwalk Society in 2003 and most recently, as one of 45 international artists featured in "Printmaking at the Edge" by Richard Noyce.  She teaches at the University of Calgary in the Engineering faculty and was recently awarded the  ‘Alan Blizzard Award for Collaborative Projects that Improve Student Learning.  She has curated and exhibited in numerous solo and group shows.

Eggermont’s work deals with the self, whether through macro images of body or synthesised landscapes incorporating elements from 17th Century Dutch masters.  Being an immigrant and not feeling entirely Canadian nor Dutch, her work expresses her duality. Her most recent work is silkscreen and silver leaf on copper.

“I have discovered phases. I think you need to have gone through at least 2 to recognize them. I just finished phase 2: the end of a process. I agree with Gary Hume in that “if it looks like it’s always been there, rather than I’ve made it” – it is done.

The second phase purged body, landscape, and above all, memory. Memory is tyranny: clogs up the hippocampus - the endless encoding and retrieving. Memory, in my mind, is a myth. Phase 3 is therefore the end of memory, not in terms of not wanting to remember, but in terms of knowing ‘the thing’ is there and letting it go . . . quiet.”
