Blake Senini is one of Alberta’s most highly regarded sculptors. Blake was born in 1954 on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Victoria in Sculpture in 1975 and his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Calgary in 1981. Blake is the recipient of numerous awards and has exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally, for over 40 years. Blake lives and works in Calgary, Alberta and is a Professor Emeritus of the Sculpture Department at the Alberta College of Art and Design.

Artist Statement

 

As a candle flickers before going out, as a glass teetering before crashing to the floor, as a bird suddenly takes flight after being surprised, as a heart that’s racing after a near-miss accident, these are insignificant moments that are hard to capture or define but somehow feel special to me. Like a passing glance or a fleeting shape, a darting shadow, a split second of time, moments that remain evasive and mysterious by their very nature are those things I try to capture in my sculpture. Something that would normally go completely unnoticed, hidden underneath or in a corner, too small, too insignificant to be bothered with by most.  These are the things that interest me the most in my work. To take those fleeting moments, spend time with them and attempt to reveal what is imbued within them.
