Charles Malinsky was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan in 1956 and graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 1978. In the late eighties, Charles took a seven year hiatus and put himself into a self imposed exile in order to concentrate on creating his trademark style of black and white figure painting and the thematic structure which would inspire his work for the next decade. In 1993, he began exhibiting with the Fran Willis Gallery in Victoria, BC, where he received both commercial and critical success. Yvone Owen wrote in Artichoke magazine (Spring 1995), “A sort of craze for the work of Malinsky developed locally, the kind of public response and excitement one usually associates with rock bands”.
In 1998, Charles was invited to exhibit in Germany where he was met with continued success. In fact, the response to his work from the media and the public was so strong that, after 20 years in Calgary, Charles made the decision to move to Spain in order to be closer to the European art world.
Charles Malinsky’s work in large-scale drawings and oil paintings are in a strict black and white palette. Malinsky’s work is theatrical and narrative. In his series, Culture of the Angles, the Black Circus and the Long Journey, Charles portrays characters in the eternal struggle of good and evil and the salvation of the human soul. In his Angel series, Malinsky’s war-like angels are powerful and erotic winged figures that battle it out in a Machiavellian world. In the Black Circus, Malinksy has created incredible and fantastical characters in the sub-culture setting of the circus. In the Fragment series, Malinsky’s palette and subject matter are more subdued and represent the ecstasy and euphoria of the angels and lastly, in his most recent series, the Long Journey, Malinsky portays individual souls on the train to the here after.
Yvonne Owens wrote of Malinsky for the NY ArtsMagazine, “Malinsky has been documenting the thematic undercurrents of this ideological drama, with astonishing prescience and incisive knowledge of its embedded, semiotic imagery, for over a decade. The canonical narrative he challenges is ancient, simple, warrior-like and effective – one in which spiritual terrorism reigns.” (NY ArtsMagazine, November/December 2004, Vol 9, No. 11/12.)
